Our HLAA Plymouth (MA) Chapter would like to offer both in-person and virtual meetings as well.

At a past chapter meeting in November 2019, Kevin Franck spoke on OTC hearing aids. We had a super turnout but I couldn't be there due to previous travel plans (yet I made all the arrangements).

Virtual meetings would be the solution to this problem, as well as one problem most chapters face:

Our chapter merged with the Cape Cod Chapter and many seniors won’t drive off of the Cape to attend our Plymouth (MA) meetings.

A tech expert told me that the problem combining virtual and in-person zoom calls is that everyone needs their own microphone.

I’m interested how this problem will be solved.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this Terri. This has been in my thoughts too as our online meetings this past year + have drawn in people who would not attend regular meetings. Of course it has also meant some of the regular ‘in person’ attendees have fallen away. Being able to offer remote connection at a regular meeting would be nice…and interesting to see how people accept it.

I hope others will share their thoughts and their experiences with this.

Hi Terri

I am conducting research on the best way for our chapter to host hybrid meetings. A lot of the decisions will depend on what equipment the facility has and what you have available. There will also have to be a different setup for an in-person presenter and a virtual presenter. There are many YouTube videos on hosting hybrid meetings but you have to determine which ones apply to your situation. I will post my findings here, although my results will not work for all.

Terri, I did not read your message closely enough. What you are proposing is the use of a virtual presenter. It is something I plan to try and address, but after I work on having a live presenter. There is less information on this format.

Facebook has a group for USA and Canadian residents for Cochlear Implants Swapping & Parts. It seems to list "for sale" items as well as free donations. It is a private group (which you can join) with about 7 thousand members. I was alerted to this facebook page, by Chad Ruffin, a MD -- Cochlear Implant Surgeon who wears two Cochlear Implants himself. In fact his story of getting into and going to Medical School is fascinating and makes for an excellent program topic. (chadruffinmd@...)

Thank you Alan, I think I’m beginning to understand that there’s no need to move our domain name to Google. That’s good to know.

After also reading the link Ann Thomas sent, it appears that our chapter just needs to be sure we qualify on TechSoup and get Google Workspace, then create email addresses in gmail.

Right now I have emails being forwarded from GoDaddy’s email (Outlook on the web) to our key board members personal emails.

The part I’m fuzzy on is once we set up Google Workspace email addresses to look like those on Godaddy ( info@..., membership@..., etc.) how to get emails to not go through GoDaddy but directly into GoogleWorkspace, and from there I can have emails forwarded to key board members.

Are you changing your domain registrar or changing the website host?

Your chapter's domain name belongs to you as long as you pay for it. It does not have to change with your host. The host is the company that provides the space and service for your website. As an example, one chapter purchased its domain name through GoDaddy (registrar). Their site was hosted through WordPress.com. They then decided to move their hosting to Bluehost and eventually made Bluehost their domain registrar (moving it from GoDaddy.) Through all this, Gmail provided their chapter's email service.

Here is a link to an article on applying and initial setup for Workspace.

Google for Nonprofits YouTube Channel

Google Domains has an article on transferring your domain name to Google Domains. Again, you do not have to switch domain registrar to "keep" your domain name. It is yours until you stop paying for it or transfer the rights to someone else. Keep in mind that changing your domain registrar also entails issues with your website such as Domain Name Servers (DNS) which normally is not an issue. I was involved with a registrar change where there were SSL security issues that required assistance from the host.

I assume you mean apply through TechSoup? Not yet. I thought we needed an email address on Google first? This feels like a chicken and egg problem. What to do first? I figured “move domain to google, create new google ID, then apply to TechSoup with that Google ID to buy Google Workspace, then create new emails within for board members”.

I’m flying blind. Maybe the info is in the link you provided?
