A few days ago, I shared this new Zoom development with a moderator for the Mayo Clinic Connect group. Today, when mentors from a variety of discussion groups came together, the captions were there and everyone was quite intrigued by them. I’m the only mentor with hearing loss, and these meetings have been a struggle for me.  I’ve managed by using a neckloop with my laptop, while teaching others a lot about hearing loss. Today’s 90 minute discussion meeting was a breeze! So pleased that Zoom now has this service. It’s gold!

I am looking into purchasing Zoom Pro for our chapter (CA North Bay) but am confused about pricing. On TechSoup, I see $65 Admin fee, which seemed good until I noticed the following (below). My question is, are other chapters paying $74.95 per host in addition to the admin fee for a total of $139.95? On the Zoom website, they charge $149.99. That’s our story too. It will to raise the funds to purchase the Zoom Pro program for board meetings as well as chapter meetings.  We pay $120/month to rent the facility where we hold meetings.  We’re living in weird times as we all know, but I see keeping this option in the future so we can involve people on our board who don’t live in the chapter’s immediate area. Obviously, it’s more socially enjoyable to be able to meet in person with HLAA friends, but this video conferencing thing has advantages too. It’s been interesting to watch the improvements in Zoom since first trying it last March.

 

I’m following the conversation on ‘who can activate auto captions on Zoom’.  As the designated host for our program, I activated it in my settings, so it will be available regardless of whom I’m zooming with.  I personally covered the cost for the first year so I could use it with family and friends as it was pretty much an ‘experiment’ when I signed up last spring. 

 

Does anyone know if it can be set to accept captions by a co-host?  I’m thinking not, so the best practice for the moment may be asking people who own Zoom Pro as hosts, regardless of who they are; business, friends, whomever; to go to their settings and include it. Once you set it, it stays on.   It also may be worth it in the future to find funds to upgrade to the program that allows more than one host.

 

I participated in a Zoom meeting of mentors for Mayo Clinic Connect yesterday. I had asked, in advance, for the host to set the captions  up. She did, and it was extremely helpful.   (Pardon me if I’m repeating myself here from another post…I’ve explained the wonder of this to a few people since that experience and not sure if it went to this group).

Margaret, the North Bay Chapter has been a pioneer in using Google Meet. IMHO, Google Meet is a superior product and the captions are the best that can be had.  Even though I have fought against the use of Zoom, it is well received by our members and Google Meet is not. Members repeatedly ask us to use Zoom. The differences may be minor, but they cause resistance. Also, Zoom allows multiple hosts: an important feature. Now that Zoom has captions, although only on Zoom Pro, I have capitulated and agreed to using Zoom Pro in place of Google Meet. I believe Google missed an opportunity to be dominant in the industry by moving too late. Other contenders, e.g., WebEx, Microsoft Teams, and Apple Facetime likewise let a golden opportunity slip out of their hands.

I think the key to whether to subscribe for non-profit rates through TechSoup or to subscribe at open market rates directly from Zoom.us is the following TechSoup statement:
Your organization will benefit from this offer most if you need at least two hosts or if you want to use add-ons.
For subscribing at open market rates from Zoom.us, there are 2 pricing for the Pro level:
  • Month-to-Month at ~$15/mth
  • Annually at ~$150/yr (an ~$30/yr savings over monthly)
  • The advantage for monthly is you can cancel anytime.
  • The other advantage is optionally add-ons are also month-to-month, meaning, for example, add/drop the larger 300 meetings upgrade only when needed for any given month.
  • On the annual plan, you will pay the add-on's pro-rated annual add-on fee for the remainder of the annual term.

Carolyn, you said earlier that you use a headset with microphone on Zoom.  Can you please tell us what headset you use? I’ve been told that my audio sometimes fades out on Zoom. I have an old Radio Shack mike that works great, but when using it, I cannot hear as it cuts the incoming audio. Obviously not a soluteion. 

 

Looking at Best Buy to see what they have. Of course there are many options at variable prices.

 

I am bimodal/CI and HA. How do we find headset that will  work with our personal technology?  I don’t want to purchase the wrong thing and regret it.

 

I’m using either an older Dell Latitude laptop or a relatively new Lenevo Laptop. It’s the Lenovo that seems to be creating the difficult for others to hear me.

 

Know you said you were a techie, so figure you would have some answers.

Julie, I use a "telecoil" solution. Telecoil is like having "noise cancelling headphones built into my hearing aids". I have two hearing aid settings--one is noise cancelling and the other allows the background noise.

I use a ClearSounds CLA7v2 neckloop with a standard 25 foot audio cord. I plug it in to whatever device I need to hear -- computer, iPhone (newer iPhone needs a $5 adapter), TV, and any device that has a standard headphone jack. I use it for all computer zoom calls. I will send more info to your email. This is a non-bluetooth solution since 1) my TV does not have bluetooth and 2) bluetooth can have it's own connection problems. Cost: $30 for the neckloop (costs more now, if you can even find it); $11 for the audio cord; and telecoil installed in my hearing aids at no additional cost. Great cost & great sound both in and out.

The California Mid-Peninsula HLAA Chapter had a "Connections" meeting (once a month dealing with technology). We discussed this issue and here are additional solutions:

Thank you again Carolyn. I responded to your personal message prior to seeing this one.  Neckloops are wonderful. I actually bought 5 of them on eBay this summer for $11 each, and have given them to people who have never tried them to use.  I’ve never found the M/T feature helpful because of even a small bit of background noise. So, when I use the neckloop on my computer it brings great sound to me from others, but I can’t hear myself and tend to talk louder than I should.

 

I’m looking for a device that will allow me to hear and also to project. In other words something with a microphone connected to it.  Like the headphones that have a microphone that some people are using. It just has to be capable of being used with my CI processor and my HA. Not sure I would use telecoils if the ear muff would allow sound via my personal devices.

 

I was prepared to call Best Buy to purchase such a device if it exists. We have a Zoom social for our HLAA chapter this evening. Since I’ve been told that my internal computer mike doesn’t project well, I thought I’d try to remedy that.  The external mike I have cuts off sound coming in from others. That is an old Radio Shack mike. Works great for others to hear me, but I want to hear them too. J

 

Will figure this out. I appreciate everyone’s input.

Hello Rich,

I will respond to your question...

Our chapter owns two accounts. Since the “free” captions is now live with zoom we plan to go down to one account.  The second account had REV captions on it which we will no longer need or need to pay for since zoom finally release free captioning features.  Anyone can host the meet as long as they have the user name and the password.  

Just a couple things to keep in mind. You cannot have two meetings going on at the same time.  Also when one signs in as the “host” make sure no one else signs in on that account to join the meeting.  Having two people joined in that account to join a meeting can cause issues.  You can always pass host responsibilities to a person in the meeting at anytime during the meeting and you can also assign a co-host.  I do advise that you assign at least one co-host in all meetings.  Doing this will help keep stability in your meeting if the host becomes unstable due to internet issues the Co-host can take over as needed.  Also not only the host can activate the free captions in the meeting.  Once activated participants can opt to turn them on.

I will respond to your question...

Our chapter owns two accounts. Since the “free” captions is now live with zoom we plan to go down to one account.  The second account had REV captions on it which we will no longer need or need to pay for since zoom finally release free captioning features.  Anyone can host the meet as long as they have the user name and the password.  

Just a couple things to keep in mind. You cannot have two meetings going on at the same time.  Also when one signs in as the “host” make sure no one else signs in on that account to join the meeting.  Having two people joined in that account to join a meeting can cause issues.  You can always pass host responsibilities to a person in the meeting at anytime during the meeting and you can also assign a co-host.  I do advise that you assign at least one co-host in all meetings.  Doing this will help keep stability in your meeting if the host becomes unstable due to internet issues the Co-host can take over as needed.  Also not only the host can activate the free captions in the meeting.  Once activated participants can opt to turn them on.

To allow captions in all meetings, you can lock that option as the host. It will then not need to be set up for each meeting.

Under ADMIN, select ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT and then ACCOUNT SETTINGS
Then under In Meeting (Advanced), scroll down to Closed Captioning and turn it on and Lock it.
Then also check Enable live transcription service to show transcript on the side panel in-meeting
