Re: Zoom Meeting, scheduled by the Host, but the Host Does not Attend
#zoom
Today I tried something new with the "Host Key" meeting (as I will call it).
I set up the scheduled meeting and sent the meeting link to a participant. She entered the meeting (without me being present) and claimed the host key. She became the Host of the meeting. While she was the Host (of my meeting) I attended another Zoom meeting, without incident. I was elated that this happened seamlessly! Please pass along your experiences with this situation. I still have to test the following scenario: What is the advantage of me, not attending my meeting? Well, it is the fact that the meeting that I scheduled operates with my default host settings...which, in my case, it may mean that they can have zoom captions (live transcript) since I have a Zoom Pro account. -- Carolyn J. Wayne, I would love to know how operator/control person does it! Is it "outside the zoom client?" and in a separate window next to zoom? I assume it is inside the zoom since you mentioned you could see it on "live transcript". I am hoping for more information from you. thanks!

Folks, I only have the basic, but my church has the Zoom Pro. The operator/control person is able to get the captions working in the break room. It is the voice recognition and is fairly accurate. I can not read the captions because they are greyed out in the captioning box. I can however, open the live transcription and that works fine.

Automatic Captions in Breakout Rooms
#ZoomCaptions
#zoom
You most likely already know that the Zoom Pro, automatic captions (in zoom language called "Live Transcript) do not work in breakout rooms.
So I did some experimenting with Ava 3rd Party captions in the Zoom Breakout Rooms. I found out that Ava will function in a breakout room. But only one room at a time, whether it is in any breakout room or the main room. Ava listens to the participants in the zoom meeting, by joining by telephone. So the host can move "AVA-telephone participant" around, whether it is the main room or the breakout room. (When AVA changes rooms, the Host just has to copy/paste the API token into the AVA website. This is not hard to do once you know how to do it. And it can be done behind the scenes, unbeknownst to the participants.) I just thought you all would like to know! (I do have a Ava Pro Light subscription by the way.) My guess is that any other 3rd Party Caption in Zoom would work the same way...but I have never tested any other 3rd Party App. -- Carolyn J. Odio

Re: Telecoil: Counter Loops and Costco
#Telecoil
UPDATE:
Yes Cheri, you have a great point! Actually, Costco should install them everywhere that they have a Hearing Aid Center in the US and inform us. And in this current communication I make a point of asking Costco to install the Counter Loops in all of the USA Costco Hearing Aid Centers, just like I did back in 2019 when I wrote the Costco CEO with the same request. But to date, they have not taken me up on that. I hope we can take full advantage of Counter Loop at Tumwater and Lacey Costcos. I attach the full correspondence as a pdf file, below. If any of you are in this area, PLEASE visit the Costco and make a point to ask for a telecoil demonstration on the Counter Loop ;) I am putting an article in the March Panorama News announcing this and asking our (1,200) residents here to ASK to use the Counter Loop. The article that I submitted is attached below. To read about Costco, just go down to the section titled, For those of you who have telecoil in your hearing Aids: Christian has not given me the date that the Hearing Loops will be installed. Once he does, I will be posting it here...and hoping that if you are in the area, you can visit and ask a Hearing Specialist Rep for that demo! Carolyn J. Odio

Hmm. Even though the HLAA community had been in touch with Costco, I don’t think Costco alerted us. I certainly would have made a visit, and promoted the accessibility as a model that other retailers could and should follow. Carolyn, you are a making progress. I wonder, might you convince them to do another pilot? Except this time, ask them to let us know the when and where? WE can help get the word out. How are pwhl supposed to try them if we don’t know where they are? ? Cheri

I know it has been frustrating that we are putting in hearing loops but few hearing aid wearers know little, if anything, about telecoil.

So I am trying to convince Costco to put in Counter Loops on their Hearing Aid Counters. I wrote the CEO of Costco back in 2019. The response came from Christian Anthis (US Operations):

Regards, Christian I don't think the Hearing Aid Specialists used the hearing counter loops. In fact, if the Hearing Aid specialists would have the customer "test" their telecoil at the counter loop, the customer would understand how much better the sound is. I forgot to make this point in my letter but maybe you can. However, I attach the most recent emaiI, that I wrote about this subject. We may be getting the Counter Loops at our Costco. If you are interested in doing the same thing...asking for a counter loop at your Costco's Hearing Aid Center...PLEASE write Christian and ask him to do the same for you! Christian's contact information is below. I am hoping a few of you will want to do this so that we can show Costco that we are interested in promoting telecoil. (I recall Consumer Reports saying that Costco sell's 1 in 5 hearing aids in the US.) If interested I attach my most recent correspondence as a pdf file. Contact: M. Dear Carolyn, It was suggested I write to you. I am a long time member of HLAA and a local member of the chapter in Los Angeles. I use otter on my iphone 11. The problem is that in the middle of a conversation the otter screen vanishes and takes me back to the sign in for my phone. Sometimes this can happen repeatedly in a 30-45 minute conversation. The otter itself continues to record so that when I get back in I have the information. However, Ive lost my place in the conversation having to stop and type in my passcode then get back into otter. I have written otter and sadly receive no response. A fellow member told me you might be able to help. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. Arlene Patton

Re: CART and Automatic Captions
You do not need to disable the Enable live transcription service to show transcript on the side panel in meeting setting in the Zoom online settings when using CART.
In the actual meeting window do not activate Live transcript, Enable AutoTranscription when using CART.

CART and Automatic Captions
I have the automatic captions (ASR) enabled in my settings and they are working well. When we have a person providing CART, do I need to change my settings so the ASR captions don't interfere with the CART? Or if I just don't turn the ASR on will that disable them for everyone else?

Practice Breakout Rooms in Zoom
#zoom
All of these instructions are my own "trial and error" so if you find something doesn't work .... or works differently for you, PLEASE let me know...that is the way I learn this stuff
Practice Breakout Rooms I attach two documents regarding my instructions with Breakout Rooms in Zoom. If you want to experiment with Breakout rooms, one idea is to add all of your devices to your Zoom meeting. I have an iPad and an iPhone so there were "three" of us...barely enough to play around with breakout rooms, but it did teach me the basics.
Better still, I thought I would have a zoom meeting just to play and practice with Breakout Rooms. My idea is to pass the "Host" around the group, at this meeting, and each person would be able to experience both what the participant "sees" and then also what the host "sees" and does--with us guiding the host through the steps.
Right now I have it scheduled for Sunday afternoon on Jan 31st at 1 PM (Pacific Time) for the weekend session and again on Monday morning on Feb 1st at 10 AM (Pacific Time) for weekdays. Both sessions would be doing the same thing. It would be good to read the handout attached before the meeting and reviewing the videos at the bottom.
So if you interested in playing with breakout rooms, you are welcome to join! Just send me your email and specify which meeting you want to attend. I will send you the zoom link about ½ hr before the meeting begins. --Carolyn J. Odio

Hearing Aid Manufacturers Are NOT Adding Telecoil to their Rechargeable Hearing Aids
#Telecoil
I enclose a letter that addresses this very important subject:
Robert Bishton <upstatehearingloops@...>Thu, Jan 21, 2021 at 4:51 PMTo: carolyn@...
Dear Carolyn, I have been a Board Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist for nearly 30 years as well as a hearing loop installer for the past couple of years, I feel our biggest obstacle right now is this: We have hearing aid manufacturers designing rechargeable RIC hearing aids w/o t-coils, nearly all of them. In 2019nearly 80% of all hearing aids dispensed were RICs and the vast majority of them rechargeable as well. For those that don't know, a RIC product is the popular small BTE model that has just the small wire with a dome that goes into the auditory canal. Some are dispensed with a mold for better fit and more gain. A standard BTE with a tube which is generally larger and more noticeable are much more likely to be available in rechargeable models but not always. The problem is this... we have audiologists and hearing instrument specialists nationwide who simply are not addressing the t-coil when discussing options with their patients. The patients want rechargeable and instruments that are not noticeable. That's the RIC product. In New York State as well as Florida, Arizona, Rhode Island, Utah and Delaware it is mandatory by law that we as dispensers discuss the t-coil and it's benefits prior to ordering hearing aids for patients. Several others are involved in legislation to include the discussion of t-coils when ordering hearing aids. We need to band together and write to all the hearing aid manufacturers and lobby to have t-coils built in to all rechargeable RIC products moving forward. Perhaps some of your members have the time to delve into this to see who we should write to at each manufacturer. I have attached a link to a letter I submitted to Hearing Review in March of 2019.
