Zoom has incorporated Captions #ZoomCaptions

Wow Zoom has captions! You may have already known about this but just in case, I am passing this along. I just learned about it.

Since I do not have a free account, rather I have a paid account, I do not know if the free account has this functionality.

1) I am on Version 5.4.4 and here is where you update your zoom account...just in case you need to:

I just went into settings and turned it on.
Here is what it looks like. Go ahead and try it.

2) Go to www.zoom.us:
Screen Shot 2020-12-06 at 8.21.16 PM.png

3) And then when you enter the meeting, as a host, you need to click on the CC Icon and click on: Live Transcript: Enable Auto Transcription!

How did you get v5.4.4? You must have a pre-release instance. Per release notes, it is due out today:
Current Release

December 7, 2020 version TBD

However, as of 8:15 AM PT, it is not out yet:

Zoom Client for Meetings

The web browser client will download automatically when you start or join your first Zoom meeting, and is also available for manual download here.
Version 5.4.3 (58891.1115)

Interestingly, this new captioning feature is not listed in the release notes:

Changes to existing features

  • Change to default behavior of desktop notifications for upcoming meetings
New users will have this setting enabled by default, reminding them of upcoming meetings through a desktop notification. Existing users will not be affected, keeping this setting as it currently is on their profile. This can be enabled through the Settings page in the Zoom web portal, or in the desktop client’s general settings.

New and enhanced features

  • General features
    • Partially encrypted meeting warning
Unencrypted connections, such as audio through phone dial-in, unencrypted SIP/H.323 devices, or streaming via RTMP, will alert the host and other attendees that some aspects of the meeting are not fully encrypted.
    • Additional MSI/GPO option
      • Disable video filters - DisableVideoFilters
  • Meeting features
    • Enhanced co-host privileges over Breakout Rooms
Co-hosts have the same breakout room controls as the meeting host, such as starting or ending breakout rooms, assigning participants, etc.
    • Move participants to main session from breakout room
Hosts and co-hosts have the option to assign a participant back to the main session, rather than ending all breakout sessions.
  • Phone features
    • Enhanced notification for unknown emergency address
For users that have enabled nomadic emergency services, we enhanced the visibility of the pop-up notification that prompts users to confirm or update their emergency address when they are in an unknown location. A user's current emergency address is also now persistently shown in the Phone tab in the client settings.

Resolved Issues

  • Resolved issue for subset of users regarding local chat transcripts saving in the incorrect location
  • Security enhancements
  • Minor bug fixes

George and Carolyn,

Thanks for this update.   I am following this closely as I have been advocating with many organizations and agencies to include this option. Many groups have paid Zoom accounts, but do not have paid Otter accounts.

It’s gotten to the point that I’ve had to set up meetings just so those of us who need captions have them.

Onward!

~Cheri

Am I missing something/  This is not a true caption setup.  You still need to have someone to type while online.  It is not an ASR.  Am I wrong?

All,
I am wondering if this is for those who have paid Otter.ai accounts. I just logged into our chapter account and noticed the availability of captioning generated by Otter.ai. I also know our chapter has a paid Otter.ai plan.
It also displayed the menu that Carolyn describes. I know Carolyn experiments with various ways of getting captions into Zoom and maybe she has an Otter.ai account linked to her Zoom account. My personal Zoom account does not display the Enable Auto Transcription option. The current download listed for Zoom Client for Meetings is 5.4.3.

Zoom is working on captions within Zoom Meeting and some of us were privileged to unannounced information about the progress of this project including that rollout would be done in phases - but not defining phases.

Carolyn, can you verify?

Here’s what happened to me: I have a Paid Otter and a Paid Zoom.  I also requested to be a beta tester, but never garnered a reply. Lo and behold one day, I noticed the live transcribe button and presto, captions! I believe it’s been almost a month now. I’m setting all my meetings now because I can bring the captions.

Hi Cheri,
As a beta tester, what version are you on? As of 10:30 AM PT 12/7/2020, the officially released Windows version is still V5,4,3.

The feature is in zoom...it does not have anything to do with a paid Otter account. (I do not have a paid Otter account) It works as a Zoom feature.

(I do have an inkling that, behind the scenes that zoom is using otter, however...but I have no idea actually how zoom set this up.)

George, as we agreed my Zoom version upgrade to 5.4.4 is due to having a MAC. I believe you mentioned that a PC gives you version upgrade to 5.4.3. Strange, isn't it?

This is very confusing with everyone contributing.  I tried today and ask two options. User type captions or use API code.  Would someone please give a direct non confusing answer.   When ask API code, it copies,  now what????????

Have a great day.

Cheri,
Are you saying that you are getting captions with Zoom without opening a separate window for Otter?  I just updated my Zoom to 5.4.6 but no captions.  I have a free Otter account and sometimes open Otter in one window, open Zoom in another and size them to both fit on the screen.  But sounds like you are getting captions at the bottom of your Zoom screen without opening Otter.  Is that right???
Thanks,
Marilyn

All.

Zoom has initiated free captions for paid Zoom accounts. If you have a paid Zoom account you need to check can additional setting in your Zoom web portal. Enable live transcription service… See the image below. After you do that  your CC icon in your  Zoom window will change. It will now have additional text that says Live Transcript.  Click on the CC button and select Enable Live Transcription. If you have been using Otter captions you will need to disconnect the Otter live stream.

Yes. But i didn't do anything special. Captions come at the bottom of the screen and I can move them under the speaker. I also have a transcript option.
Sorry, I can't be more helpful!~

Carolyn,

Your You Tube was so easy to understand.  Thanks so much.  I've already made the changes to my account and had a Zoom meeting with  myself and the captions were great!  Thanks again.
