Hearing Loops and Transportation Article

Stephen O. Frazier

Hi All - There have been shorter pieces elsewhere but the Jan/Feb issue of TR News, the transportation industry magazine of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, has a new and much more detailed article of mine on the growing presence of hearing loops in the transportation industry.

For anyone who might find the article helpful in their advocacy, the magazine was delayed and is still at the printer but the article is posted at my website (www.sofnabq.com).

The endorsement of hearing loop technology by Amtrak, the Port Authority of NY and NJ and other entities bodes well for the continued growth in the availability of hearing loops for travelers.

Great article.  I will share this with my hearing loss group.

One quick question about looping a cab. . . I assume there is a microphone on the dash and copper wiring in the back seat of the vehicle?

I don’t understand how Hearing Loops can be installed in cars. When I turn on my T coil in the car, I get a lot of static, I assume from the electromagnetic interference of the engine. Same thing if I try to use a neck loop on an airplane with my T coils.  ??
Thanks!

When there is no loop, your hearing aids go to maximum sensitivity, so they pick up the interference. When there is a signal from the loop, the sensitivity automatically reduces, so you don't hear the interference.

NY City has had hearing loops in taxi since around 2016.
