Noisy Restaurant

Edited

If you want to communicate in a noisy restaurant the best experience I ever had was using the Roger Pen & Roger MyLink, which I purchased for over $1,500 in 2017.
Now you can get a Roger Pen for under $100 in eBay, since this is old technology & no longer manufactured. Therefore, I can afford to purchase 6 of them to use at a restaurant (one per person at the table). Be sure you buy Version Roger Pen 1.1. I learned how to set this up when I was a member of the HLAA Peninsula Chapter (San Francisco area).

SCENARIO:
Guests: I give a networked Roger Pen to each person at the table to wear in lanyard mode (mode is very important).
Me: Since I don't have Phonak hearing aids I wear the Roger MyLink Neckloop "receiver" and turn on my telecoil setting. It is important to be able to choose the "Telecoil only" setting to receive the voices from the Roger Pens without the background noise. (I find most audiologists do not program telecoil only unless you ask for it.) If I am the only one with the hearing loss, I don't need to also wear a Roger Pen. If I am not, then I also need to wear a Roger Pen.

Before you go to the restaurant you need to be sure you have "networked" everything. Using the bluetooth button, you need to "pair" each Roger Pen to one "Master" Roger Pen. The pen that is first turned on becomes the "Master". I take the "Master" pen and each item separately, away from the other equipment, to do this pairing one at a time for all Pens and all MyLinks.

Test this before you go to the restaurant to be sure all Roger Pens/MyLinks work together.

I can hear the other members at the table, so well, it brings tears to my eyes!

HI Carolyn,

Thank you for sharing this information about the Roger Pen and MyLink! I believe we, in HLAA, have the dual purpose of 1) finding out about the latest available technology and 2) obtaining it, at the lowest possible fair pricing - for our HLAA members.

One of my pet projects I would like to work on is - reaching out to audiologists to program telecoil in hearing aids, or, at least know to offer that option, without the HOH/deaf patient having to ask for this.

Please feel free to contact me, anytime, at my HLAA chapter email address: hlaaeasternctchapter@...

Take care,
Janine

Hi Stephen,

Absolutely, HLAA has to advocate for this - to ensure audiologists offer T coil programming in hearing aids. If HLAA is supporting the drive to install hearing loops, that should be concurrent with making sure audiologists are aware of and to offer T coil in their patients' hearing aids.
That is the whole point of hearing loops. They help HOH/deaf people by connecting to the T coil in hearing aids. Without people having T coil in their hearing aids, what's the point of installing hearing loops? Not only that, but it's just the principle of advocating for HOH/deaf people - to help them as much as possible. For audiologists not to be aware of T coils or to not mention them as an option and to explain to their patients the benefits of T coil - this is hurting HOH/deaf people. HLAA has to be on top of this. I'm certainly going to push on this - in Connecticut, which also has far to go with having venues with hearing loops. We have much more work to do. And the hearing impaired population is increasing, as baby boomers are aging. However, young adults and teenagers are losing hearing at a higher rate, than in the past, thanks to music and technology blasting sound, all around them.

I couldn’t find this on the HLAA website, so I linked it from our chapter's website. If you do not already have it, it may help with what you are doing.
