Questions

Stephen O. Frazier

Hi Cindy - Surprised you have not been put in touch with the various lists to give you a feel for what sort of articles would be of interest to HLAA members and HL readers.

There is (or was) a newsletter editors list that I organized years ago but I don't know if it's still active of not.  It was a Yahoo list and when the changes came as a result of Yahoo discontinuing that service I don't know if it continued or not - the local chapter editor here did not belong.

Here are the lists I believe are currently active.  I would think of you send an email to each of these addresses that you would get a return email instructing you as to how to go about being added to the list.

"All Things Tech Groups.io"<HLAATech@groups.io>,
"GITHL Group HLAA"<HLAAGITHL@...>,
"HLAA GITHL"<HLAAGITHL@groups.io>,
"HLAA Tech"<HLAATech@...>,<HLAALeaders@groups.io>,

If you're interest, I have started a new blog and have a website where all of my articles get posted (www.sofnabq.com).  The blog is brand new and I sent out an email notice about it last week to my 2500 member database of HoH, hearing care providers, other service providers, loop manufacturers/distributors/installers.  They also all get my quarterly newsletter   I could add your name to blog and the newsletter if you're interested.

One of the comments I've seen repeated on the leaders list is that they would like to see more articles in HL that apply to their life - how to articles, new tech articles etc. instead of "my life stories".  That's what prompted me to write the two pieces I submitted.

Regards,

Steve

Stephen,

How can I get into the listservs? I'm curious about what is being said about the lack of direction, and the magazine happenings in general (it makes me a little crazy, unsure and dubious, if you must know). Just curiouscan you tell me a bit more?

Thanks

Hi Cindy - Thanks for your very prompt reply.  In looking over the latest issue of the magazine and the website I could find no listing of an editor.  I share your hope that you'll be officially named the editor and that it will stay that way.  I don't know if you follow the various  HLAA listservs but the troops are getting restless with all of the changes and seeming lack of direction.

The articles in question were attached to my email to you yesterday..  I know you can't tell me right now that they will or will not be used but at least I now know they are there for consideration.

Regards,

Steve

Julie Olson HLAA in Wisconsin/Appleton

I am also wondering about the HLAA newsletter group. It seems that many think websites have overtaken newsletters. That seems to be a mistake. People go to websites for basic information. They don’t go there regularly for info about meetings. Seniors tend to prefer getting a printed newsletter to read at their convenience. It’s a reality that most of our members are 60+ in age. Sending it by e-mail is good too, but best to use both means of circulation if possible.

Our chapter newsletter is printed and mailed to about 300 recipients. It is e-mailed to another 200. This monthly newsletter is also our meeting notice.  It gives people the chance to contribute to it if they choose.   Even more important, our chapter newsletter is our main fundraiser.  We don’t have advertisements in the publication. Instead, we have a Sponsor Column.  There are 4 categories of Sponsors; Platinum, Gold, Silver & Bronze. Each calendar year we raise between $5000 and $6000 in sponsor donations.  Some are from hearing healthcare professionals, but most are from people who have attended our chapter meetings who want to support our efforts.  They  are listed alphabetically in the 4 categories.  This project has also generated some bequests. Our chapter is 35+ years old, so we have lost several who were dedicated to HLAA over the years.

I mention this because we believe in our newsletter. Several years ago we considered dropping it and going with a website. A survey we sent out with the newsletter showed that people wanted the newsletter to continue, and so it has.

I’d like to know if the national HLAA Group for newsletters still exists as I’ve not seen anything posted recently. Nor have I posted our chapter’s publication. I’d like to.

I encourage chapters to consider how a printed and published NL can help grow your chapter and help it thrive financially.

Our chapter does not have dues. We encourage people to become national members.

NOTE: We do post information on our HLAAWI state website under chapters. Not knocking websites as they serve a purpose too. They just don’t work well as a meeting notice that will draw people to a meeting or program.

I’ve been posted our Peninsula chapter newsletters on the HLAA Newsletter Editors group, so it definitely still exists. Here’s the link.
