Thank you Alan. We have used both Google Meets and Zoom during the past 2 years. We’ve decided to purchase the Zoom Pro program for the chapter because it just seems to work better for us. Admittedly, it has taken time and practice to figure out how to use it the best possible way, but we’re very happy with it. In fact, our non-brand specific Cochlear Implant support group has decided to use it regularly, rather than go back to in person meetings. It’s been extremely helpful to bring in people from outlying areas.
Our regional technical college has started offering ‘senior’ programs for people who want to learn more about Zoom before hopping on board. We hope that will help. We have lost some members during the pandemic crisis, but have gained some as well. We look forward to holding in person meetings as soon as we can, but I believe we will also incorporate some meetings on Zoom each year so we can expand our program possibilities and extend our outreach.
That said, it’s been interesting. I attended the meeting last week where you had problems with Zoom. It was definitely interesting to see that happen at a meeting held by the very people in California who have been such leaders in using Zoom. (Thank you for that, by the way.) We’ve had our glitches. I’ve closed a meeting by hitting the wrong ‘button’. We’ve found that we have to teach and re teach a lot of things, but in the end it has been well worth it.
Thank you for staying on top of this for all of us. One question: I’ve not been able to upgrade my Zoom account unless I get a message from Zoom to do so. That happens fairly often, and I do update when I get that message. I tried to find a way to upgrade by going into the Zoom site, but did not find a way to do that. Any thoughts on that?
Again, thank you for all you do out there. So glad we have the means to communicate via the internet. LOL. I go way back to the 80s as a member of the national SHHH Board of Trustees when we had to use regular mail between meetings to communicate. Eventually e-mail was available but so many people refused to try it. A few people even dropped off the board because of this. For those of us who worked to learn it, it streamlined everything we were doing…as you can imagine. Hard to sit back and realize all that has occurred electronically since the good old days!

If anyone experienced problems after updating to Zoom version 5.7.7, Zoom released 5.7.8, which seems to fix all the crazies that happened after the .7 update. Issues ran the gamut from freezing, random blocks of various colors appearing on the screen, unable to control anything within the Zoom environment, including leaving the meeting. The latest release came on Friday, 9/10. From what I and others experienced, this seemed to affect PC users.

It's almost funny that the release notes for Zoom V 5.7.8 says "Minor bug fixes". The problems that were experienced were a real pain.Tony

Look at Louise's post in this thread on how to check for updates. Zoom, at least in its desktop app, will force an update if none has been done in the previous nine months. When you log into Zoom, if there is an update available, it will be either a mandatory or optional update. You have to install the mandatory update before proceeding. Optional updates are minor revisions to the app.

Thanks Alan. We held our chapter meeting last night on Zoom. The chapter owns and pays for the basic Pro Program. We had all the same issues that the CA chapter had last week. People were let in, everything went well for a while, then all of a sudden it started. People froze, I was a co-host and lost all the controls so could not exit the meeting to reenter. I had been letting people in from the waiting room, and all of a sudden that option disappeared. Not chat either. A couple others were stuck in the meeting at the end and could not leave until the host shut the meeting down. I think the host had full control most of the time. It was crazy, but we handled it. We did tell everyone who was there to update their Zoom program. Most of them only use Zoom to attend our meetings and don’t use it personally. The interesting part was that everyone could hear the speakers most of the time, but some couldn’t see them. We have a CART provider, and her captions were visible to everyone. On my screen I had all the participants, but no indicator of who was speaking. Also no ability to mute/unmute myself. Needless to say this was frustrating but the program went on. Our CI group meets next week. We use ASR captions for that. It will be interesting to see how that goes.
One thing I’m wondering: The Zoom program is in our chapter’s name and e-mail address. Three of us have access to that e-mail account and can set up a Zoom meeting. All three of us were at last night’s meeting. I’m wondering if that might be a problem. Two were co-hosts, while one was host.

https://zoom.us/download
--click on "Zoom Client for Meetings" Download button
(You will know what version you are updating to, as it states it there)
--Once downloaded, click on the download package (I have a Mac & the name of it is "Zoom.pkg")
--follow instructions to install the software
--If it asks you for your password. it is the password you use to open your computer
--At the end of the process, I move the installer to "trash"
You should get a green checkmark, that indicates success
For me it takes less than a minute to do it.
=============
If you are curious about what version you are on, do the following:
1) click the zoom icon (blue with white video camera)
2) be sure you are on the HOME page tab (see top)
3) click on the tiny gear at top right corner
4) click on the Statistics (menu on left)
5) at bottom will be the version you are running on

The problems you listed I, and several others, had with Zoom 5.7.7. The latest version, 5.7.8 seems to solve those issues. Please let me know what version you were using. Julie says she had problems, but I thought she had updated before her meeting. If there are issues with the latest Zoom version, you need to contact Zoom support. Here is how to check for your Zoom version and how to update it.

Whew! All this just to confirm that I had previously updated to version 5.7.8, which supposedly fixed the bugs from 5.7.7, but since they came out with another update so quickly, I'm guessing they still had some pesty bugs that still needed fixing!
Why on earth Zoom would have a "desktop client" that looks different than the zoom.com view is beyond me! And they also have an App to maintain as well?! What a pain! Oh, and by the way, I contacted Zoom tech support and they got back to me fairly quickly, but after FOUR responses (the first 3 of which were bot/virtual automated responses, similar to what y'all said above in this string), they still didn't provide sufficient info/answer my questions/issue!
Thanks again! Let's all cross our fingers & toes that the latest updates fix the weird issues we've been experiencing!

OMG, I figured it out! I had been going into Zoom by just typing in zoom.com in Chrome web browser. However, when all the zoom instructions say to click on the profile picture to check Zoom version, I realized they were also referring to the Zoom "Desktop Client". If anyone has had a similar issue, go into Zoom support or just Google how to start Zoom desktop client, and you can download it, or verify if you already have it. I already had it, but didn't realize it, ugh! If you have the blue icon on your taskbar on the bottom with the white video camera picture, that's the shortcut icon for Zoom Desktop Client. If you hover over that it says Start Zoom. Click on that and it will open up a window for Zoom that looks very different than what I've been seeing on zoom.com.Then when the window first opens (before you log in) it shows the Zoom version at the bottom of the window, tada! Or after you log in, you can click on the profile image in upper right corner and then click Help-About Zoom to figure out the version. In the same menu then click Check for updates, and it will let you know that there is a new update 5.8 so go ahead and let it update to that.
